Your Immune System

Can Chiropractic care keep me from getting sick?

Patients call the office when they feel sick or feel they are coming down with something.  They are calling to cancel their appointment because they feel like they should not be going out.  I disagree with that 100% in most cases.  The fact is, this is when you need treatment the most.  When your immune system is compromised and you are starting to feel susceptible to illness you need to have your spine adjusted by a chiropractor to boost your immune system and keep yourself healthy.

I have put together some information to explain what I mean by all of this.  The bottom line is that Chiropractic care will boost you and your families immune systems to keep you all healthy and well.  It is my responsibility as your Chiropractor to keep you going to work, school, and all of the kids soccer games and school programs. (Even during cold and flu season)

“Boost Your Immune System with Chiropractic Care”

Since its inception, chiropractic has asserted that viruses and microbes don’t threaten us all equally and that a healthy immune system easily repels most invaders. The immune system protects us from the flu, as well as any other infectious disease, and strives to get us well again when we do fall ill. Our immune system, like every other system in the body, is coordinated and controlled by the nervous system.

Chiropractic corrects spinal abnormalities called vertebral subluxations that result in interference of the nervous system by placing pressure on nerves. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body, including the immune system, chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function.

During an immune response, the brain and the immune system ‘talk to each other’ and this process is essential for maintaining homeostasis or balance in the body. If the Nervous System is not functioning properly, then the Immune System cannot function at 100%, thus the body becomes fertile ground for bacteria, viruses and illness

Children who have regular Chiropractic adjustments have fewer colds, ear infections and flu. “People who receive regular chiropractic adjustments have immune system competency that is 200% greater than those who don’t.” (Dr. Ron Pero. New York Preventative Medicine Institute and Environmental Health at NYU)

Even though you may not feel sick, your body may be acquiring misalignments of the spine (subluxations) that are interfering with your nervous system and thus your immune system. Regular chiropractic check-ups can help you to maintain a healthy immune system and stave off illnesses or allergies. A chiropractic adjustment will restore the balance of your nervous system and restore the flow of energy and information throughout the body, thus validating one of the great benefits of chiropractic care!

The Nervous System and Your Immune System

According to MassChiro.org, the condition of the nervous system determines whether or not you will recover from certain immune system disorders and diseases. By correcting any problems with the spine, the chiropractor can restore functioning of the nervous system so that the body can heal itself, naturally.

Recent studies show that the autonomic portion of the nervous system is directly affected by spinal dysfunction or subluxations, and your immune system will suffer if the dysfunction is not corrected. Abnormal stimulation of certain parts of the spine can cause a reflex response of the autonomic nervous system, putting you at risk for developing certain types of diseases and making it difficult to recover from various health problems.

Benefits of Chiropractic Treatment on the Immune System

Regular chiropractic treatments can improve overall health and well-being, but they are will also keep the spinal column and nervous system free of excessive stress. This results in improved communication between the nervous system and the spine, which can help to promote the natural healing process.

According to Dr. Smith’s report, “Research has shown a definite correlation between the chiropractic adjustment and improved immune function. One nervous system chemical that affects the proliferation of T-lymphocytes, substance P, has been shown to be increased after a chiropractic adjustment. Another study showed a consistent increase in T-4 lymphocytes in patients who have regular chiropractic care. Studies are continuing to determine what is the optimum treatment frequency. This is usually determined by patient response, as each body responds differently to an infection.

Other Benefits of Chiropractic Therapy

In addition to improving nervous system functioning, chiropractic therapy can help to:

*       Improve posture

*       Increase feelings of well-being

*       Increases circulation

*       Reduces risk of injury

*       Reduces soreness and pain

*       Increases range of motion and flexibility

*       Helps the body repair itself naturally, especially after injury

*       Reduces recovery time

*       Increases delivery of oxygen and nutrients

*       Promotes removal of lactic acid

*       Increase natural vitality

*       Improve digestive function

Regular chiropractic treatments have many positive effects on the body, and studies show a direct link between nervous system functioning and the immune system response. If you have been suffering from the effects of a poorly functioning immune system, you may be a good candidate for chiropractic care. Come into the office today and lets talk about what we may be able to do for you.
